The HI96738 Chlorine Dioxide Portable Photometer combines accuracy and ease of use in an ergonomic, portable design. Using the HI93738-01 ready-made reagents a user can accurately determine the concentration of chlorine dioxide within a 0.00 to 2.00 mg/L (ppm) range. The HI96738 offers many advanced features including the exclusive CAL Check™ function used for performance verification and calibration of the meter.
The HI96738 portable photometer is for the measurement of chlorine dioxide. Hanna’s portable photometers feature an advanced optical system; the combination of a special tungsten lamp, a narrow band interference filter, and silicon photodetector ensure accurate photometric readings every time. The Hanna exclusive CAL Check™ feature utilizes ready-made, NIST traceable standards to verify both meter validation and calibration. The exclusive cuvette locking system ensures that the cuvette is inserted into the measurement cell in the same position every time to maintain a consistent path length.
CAL Check™ – Allows for performance verification and calibration of the meter using NIST traceable standards.

Auto-shut off – Automatic shut off after 10 minutes of non-use when the meter is in measurement mode. Prevents wastage of batteries in the event the meter is accidentally left on.
Battery status indicator – Indicates the amount of battery life left.
Built-in timer – Display of time remaining before a measurement is taken. Ensures that all readings are taken at the appropriate reaction intervals for the test being performed.
Error messages – Messages on display alerting to problems including no cap, high zero, and standard too low.
Cooling lamp indicator – To maintain the desirable wavelength to be used for absorbance, it is necessary to ensure components are not overheated from the heat generated by the tungsten lamp. Each photometer is designed to allow a minimal amount of time for components to cool. The cooling lamp indicator is displayed prior to a reading being taken.
Units of measure – Appropriate unit of measure is displayed along with reading.
Used primarily as a disinfectant in drinking water and in various industrial processes, chlorine dioxide is a highly effective, environmentally friendly microbiocide. Chlorine dioxide is safe, potent, and does not produce trihalomethanes, the disinfection byproduct characteristic of chlorine use.
The HI96738 uses an adaptation of the chlorophenol red method to measure chlorine dioxide concentrations of less than 2.00 mg/L (ppm). When the chlorophenol red reagent is added to samples containing chlorine dioxide, the purple hue from the reagent will lessen; the greater the concentration, the greater the discoloration. The associated color change is then colorimetrically analyzed according to the Beer-Lambert Law. This principle states that light is absorbed by a complementary color, and the emitted radiation is dependent upon concentration. For chlorine dioxide determination, a narrow band interference filter at 575 nm (yellow) allows only yellow light to be detected by the silicon photodetector and omits all other visible light emitted from the tungsten lamp. As the color of the reacted sample lessens, absorbance of the specific wavelength of light also decreases, while transmittance increases.
